With the twists and turns of the last month, Utah County’s Pioneer Day fireworks rules can be hard to follow.

Use this guide to find your city’s current status, official map or guidance, and nearby professional fireworks shows. Because cities are still issuing updates, check the linked official source before lighting fireworks.

Situation at a glance: How we got here

The recent ban of fireworks in Utah came as the state entered the summer in severe drought. Nearly 95% of Utah was in severe-or-worse drought, and roughly one-quarter of Utah County was in extreme drought. Firefighting crews were already committed to major incidents, while hot, dry and windy weather left vegetation highly combustible.

Against that backdrop, Gov. Spencer Cox issued an emergency order before Independence Day that temporarily expanded the State Forester’s authority inside cities. The state and many municipalities imposed broad restrictions for July 2–5, including citywide bans in several Utah County communities. State officials later said the restrictions appeared to reduce the risk of catastrophic fireworks-caused fires, and most residents in restricted areas complied.

How cities and the state will approach Pioneer Day almost three weeks later has been an open question. Conditions improved in some parts of Utah after monsoon moisture and higher humidity, but the improvement has been uneven.

On July 20, Cox announced a hybrid approach. Inside city limits, existing municipal restriction maps again became the default. However, cities that believe their normal restrictions are inadequate may ask the State Forester to approve a broader or citywide ban, and fireworks remain prohibited on state, federal and unincorporated lands. The result is that neighboring cities may have very different rules, and some decisions are still pending.

Where that leaves Utah County:

Personal fireworks prohibited citywide: Alpine, American Fork, Cedar Hills, Draper, Eagle Mountain, Elk Ridge, Highland, Lehi, Lindon, Orem, Pleasant Grove, Provo and Woodland Hills.
Personal fireworks allowed only in mapped areas: Mapleton, Payson, Salem, Santaquin, Saratoga Springs, Spanish Fork, Springville and Vineyard.
Personal fireworks prohibited: unincorporated Utah County, state lands, federal lands and state park lands.
Cedar Fort, Fairfield, Genola and Goshen have not confirmed their Pioneer Day rules—do not assume fireworks are allowed.

Legal discharge dates and hours

July 22, July 23 and July 25: 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
July 24: 11 a.m. to midnight.
These hours apply only where local and state restrictions allow personal fireworks.

Where personal fireworks remain prohibited

All state park land and state and federal forest land.
Unincorporated land under the governor’s updated Pioneer Day guidance.
Any city-designated restricted area or citywide closure.
Any additional area closed by the State Forester because of extreme wildfire danger.

Violations and safety

Discharging fireworks outside the legal dates and hours, or in a prohibited area, is an infraction punishable by a fine of up to $1,000. Illegal or negligent use that causes a fire, injury or property damage may bring additional civil or criminal consequences.

Use fireworks only on a flat, clear surface away from dry vegetation; keep water nearby; supervise children; and soak used fireworks before disposal.

Alpine

Status: Personal fireworks prohibited citywide through July 25.
What to know: Based on recommendations from the State Forester and Lone Peak Fire Chief, Alpine City will continue its fireworks ban through the Pioneer Day holiday. Effective immediately, the discharge of all fireworks is prohibited within Alpine through July 25.

American Fork

Status: Personal fireworks prohibited citywide.
What to know: The city says the Pioneer Day prohibition includes the days leading up to and following the holiday. Previously published permissible-area maps are suspended. The post does not give exact beginning and ending dates.

Cedar Fort

Status: Current guidance not confirmed—do not assume fireworks are allowed.
What to know: No current Pioneer Day guidance or municipal restriction map was found.

Cedar Hills

Status: Personal fireworks prohibited citywide.
What to know: Cedar Hills is prohibiting personal fireworks within city limits for the Pioneer Day period. The city says it coordinated with the mayor, fire chief and State Forester and will enforce the restriction with zero tolerance.

Draper

Status: Personal fireworks prohibited citywide from July 22 through July 25.
What to know: The Utah State Forester approved Draper City’s application for a full ban on personal fireworks throughout the city during the Pioneer Day discharge period of July 22–25.

Eagle Mountain

Status: Personal fireworks prohibited citywide through July 25.
What to know: Eagle Mountain, with State Forester approval, prohibits personal fireworks citywide through July 25. The city points residents to Fireworks at Utah Lake on July 24 and its Summer Bash & Laser Show on July 25.

What to know: The Daily Herald reports that the Elk Ridge City Council approved a resolution on June 23 prohibiting fireworks through November 2026, including the Pioneer Day discharge period. The resolution text was not located on the city website.

Fairfield

Genola

Status: Current guidance not confirmed—do not assume fireworks are allowed.
What to know: No municipal restriction map was found; the state directory points only to the earlier statewide action.

Highland

Status: Personal fireworks prohibited citywide through July 25.
What to know: Highland says fireworks are not permitted anywhere in the city for the Pioneer Day holiday through July 25.

Mapleton

Status: Personal fireworks allowed only in mapped areas.
What to know: Mapleton has published an updated fireworks restriction map for July 22–25. Fireworks may be used only where the map permits and only when the location is at least 200 feet from dry grass, brush, weeds, trees, fields, trails, waterways or other combustible vegetation.

Orem

Status: Personal fireworks prohibited citywide from July 22 through July 25.
What to know: Orem has implemented a citywide ban on personal fireworks for the Pioneer Day discharge window because of the ongoing risk of extreme wildfire. The city encourages residents to attend the professional shows over Utah Lake and at University Place instead.

Payson

Status: Personal fireworks allowed only in mapped areas.
What to know: Payson prohibits fireworks in the red areas on its updated map, including areas near the foothills and canyons. Legal fireworks remain allowed in non-restricted areas during authorized dates and times. Residents in restricted areas may use the parking areas at Payson Memorial Park, the Payson City Center west lot, and the Payson ball fields and soccer complex.

Pleasant Grove

Status: Personal fireworks prohibited citywide from July 22 through July 25.
What to know: Pleasant Grove says the ban was imposed because of extremely dry conditions, little to no recent precipitation and heightened wildfire risk.

Provo

Status: Personal fireworks prohibited citywide through July 25.
What to know: Provo will remain under a temporary citywide fireworks discharge ban through July 25 because of continued extreme wildfire risk. Personal fireworks are not allowed anywhere within Provo during the ban.

Where: Two barges on Utah Lake. The east barge is intended to be viewed from shore; the west barge is best viewed by boat.
